I love this four-inch pairing knife. It is super sharp when it arrives and it stays super sharp for a long time if taken care of properly. It feels very good in your hand and is a pleasure to use. I have wasted too much money on cheap discount store knives. I am so happy that I found this Henckels pairing knife on Amazon.
My go to knife now..This knife is spot on sharp..already had one oooppps..nothing serious and totally my fault but if your looking for a sharp knife look no further..nice weight and the handle reminds me of my moms old favorite pairing knife she had for years..You can't go wrong with this one..Kind of confusing as i noticed it says German engineered so i assumed it was made in Germany but the package says made in Spain..But made in Spain or where ever just call me happy with this knife...Quality
The knife is very sharp and cuts easily. Good product for the money. I do wish it had included a sheath. I bought a cheap knife at Walmart so I could repurpose the sheath that came with the cheap one.
Well constructed, sharp, easy to use, bought for husband to use and he really likes it.
So I recently have bought 4 new knives, three lower end Henckles (NOT Zwilling Henckles which are the good German steel/ two figures in the logo— don’t compare the Henckles with one figure, those are Henckles and their low end models). This Spain made paring knife shown in the photo is also NOT the same as a Zwilling Henckles German made knife. The handle is much lighter, and the balance on the Spain and India made knives are a bit off and too light in the blade. This is more disappointing in the Classic paring knife as it was $27, which is still less than the Zwilling model/German made blade (about $45 usually) , so this is an actual mid grade knife bc the Spain made knife is German steel, just not the quality German steel. I am, however, satisfied with this Classic line knife. The steel is nice, has a little flex to it, I think it will hold an edge reasonably well. The handle is ok, could be rounded off on the edges some and a be bit larger, but it’s ok. The price is fair for the quality and this knife should last reasonably long, I’d say 15 yrs with moderate use and decent care at least. (Hand wash and dry, NEVER dishwasher, don’t leave it in the sink and sharpen as needed). Now, if you are in the market for just a knock about knife and don’t want to pay much/aren’t looking for especially great quality, the India/Solutions made knife is the way to go. Skip the China/Statement line Henckles unless you literally find one for $5 or less, are fine sharpening it frequently and don’t plan to keep it long. (My good Zwillings are going on 27 years now, and only a paring knife has needed to be replaced due to a tip snapping off, I need to return that to Henckles).Another brand that popped up in my searches was Hammer Stahls, which are tempting bc they are made with the same German steel as Wusthof Tridents (which doesn’t make them the same, but you’re in the ballpark). The HS’s LOOK well designed and made, and you will think they are a deal, but they aren’t. The steel is nice, but the handle has 8 rivets that stick up annoyingly, the handle is too short even for my small hands, and the balance is way off. Horrible, horrible design. Go with the Henckle Classics made in Spain instead. The steel isn’t quite as nice, but the handle build and feel will make up for it. If you must have the good German steel but don’t want to pay Henckle prices, go with the Scan Pan knives over the Hammer Stahls. Scan Pan makes amazing cookware, their knives are reasonably priced, good steel and scored very well in independent tests.TLDR- India made Henckles are a good value for the low price, if you want a little better quality go with the Spain made Classics. Avoid China made/Statement line Henckles at all costs unless you pay $5 or less and have zero appreciation/care for quality cutlery and will just abuse it.Check out Scan Pan knives for a huge steel upgrade, comfortable design, good build, and still reasonably priced. Avoid Hammer Stahl due to extremely poor machining and design/not comfy in the hand, definitely not for larger hands.
Great, sharp knife. Too soon to tell how long it holds its edge though. It looks like good steel.
We already have a Henkels knife, but it is very long and tends to knock down everything on the counter when I'm chopping. This length is much better and does the same job.
I like this knife, works well and sharpens easily
In my misspent youth, in the early 70's, I worked for a year as a sous chef in one of the top French restaurants in the US, though my basic careers have been as a studio guitarist & a consulting programmer. But, in the restaurant, I learned from a chef de cuisine who had trained in a 2-star Michelin restaurant in France, so I learned excellent technique. He gifted me with top-line professional Henckel's 8" & 10" knives when I started, which I had until I moved last year & the movers lost the box with my knife block (sigh...). Given that my Henckel's had cost over $200 apiece 50 years ago & were still like brand new, I gave up on replacing them now. This, which I got on sale (I believe its retail price today was around $120) is the best knife I've owned outside of my professional knives. My only complaint is that it is weighted for homemaker use. A professional long-bladed knife is weighted so that the balance point is actually ahead of the tang at the first half-inch of the blade. If you grip it with thumb & forefinger at the back edge of the blade, it should balance evenly. Chefs hold their knives with the first knuckle over the tang actually on the blade (you can often tell a chef from the diagonal groove on their index fingers). When you hold a properly weighted 8" or10" knife like that, it is perfectly balanced & feels weightless. You can flute a mushroom with it as easily as with a 4" paring knife. The knife does all the work when you slice with it. This knife's balance point is behind the tang, at the point where the handle meets the tang, so holding it properly means too much of the weight of the knife is behind the blade. 99 out of 100 people have never handled a perfectly balanced knife, so won't notice this minor flaw in the knife. For them, this will still be the best knife they'll ever own & far better, sharper & easier to use than anything they can buy at any ordinary big-box store (and still MUCH cheaper than a professional knife). Go for it & enjoy. But, keep a Henckel paring knife handy to flute your mushrooms ;).
Sharpness only surprised me as old knife was so dull. The flexibility of the blade is great if you’re prepared for it. Hopefully it doesn’t bend to a breaking point.
